The genesis of the Department of Education dates back to 1948 when it started functioning as a full-fledged craft oriented Teacher Training Institution, named as Vinaya-Bhavana. Right from its inception, the Department has been mandated to make a Praxis of Education by blending the knowledge and skill together. It has also been the top priority of the Department to keep itself anchored upon Tagorean philosophy while making education always relevant and a joyful experience for the students by way of continuous innovation and improvement of its curriculum and pedagogy. There have been continuous efforts towards minimization of the gaps between theory and practice of education. Work Education programme of the Department alongside its focus on value education, personality development, nurturing of creativity, cultural sensitivity, eco-consciousness and community engagements make the life of the students and teachers fulfilling and wholesome indeed. While continue to be a pace setting institution of the country in general and West Bengal State in particular with regard to its unique Teacher Education programme enriched by its indigenous inputs , it has always been open to the progressive thoughts / ideas as well as methodological and technological breakthroughs in the discipline of education across the globe.
The Department now offers two-year B.Ed. and two-year M.Ed. teacher education programmes as well as M.A. (Education) as a liberal academic programme . It also offers Doctoral level research programme in Education. In view of its research potential, the Department has been granted with Special Assistance Programme (SAP)-DRS-Phase-I in the year 2015.
Esteemed faculty members of the Department of Education have always made their remarkable contributions towards formulation of National Policies of Education, National Curriculum Frameworks of Teacher Education of NCTE, National Curriculum Frameworks of School Education of NCERT and Model Curriculum of UGC.
Introduction of four-year integrated teacher education programme, adoption of neighbourhood villages of select schools facilitating internship of B.Ed. and M.Ed. programmes for their all-round development through need-based community services, and establishment of Centre for Studies in Human Values and Epoch-making Thinkers are the future plans of the Department on priority.
